Give us today our daily bread. Matthew 6:11 NIV
When Nothing Satisfies…
After almost two weeks of being stuck at home due to the COVID-19 outbreak, I started getting bored with the food I had at home and did not get satisfaction from them anymore. I actually resorted to snacking – even right after meals – and was so relentless that one night, I had three Stem Ginger biscuits in a row right after dinner. I would have even continued had I not chided myself.
Just like nothing was able to satisfy my hunger or cravings, sometimes nothing that people do or say can help us feel better when we experience serious challenges.
Jesus is the Bread of Life
I make bold to say that Jesus is the only one that can satisfy our deepest longings and cravings for peace, love, joy, healing, comfort, forgiveness, acceptance, etc. He is the Bread of Life.
Then Jesus declared, “I am the bread of life. Whoever comes to me will never go hungry, and whoever believes in me will never be thirsty. John 6:35 NIV
What is this Daily Bread? It is the Word of God. And we know that the Word of God is God Himself.
In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. John 1 :1 NIV
Therefore, permit me to re-translate John 6:35 to mean that when we come to the Bread of Life (Jesus – God), and eat His Word (follow His instructions, heed His counsel), we will not be hungry (hopeless and lost, not knowing what to do). Neither will we be thirsty (running around seeking answers we may never find elsewhere) if we believe in Him (and His word which are one and the same).
The Word of God is our necessary food
The Word of God is the bread we should eat daily. It is our necessary food and not the snacks (the flawed ideas, suggestions, remedies and deceptions of men) that do not satisfy.
Studying the Word via reading the Bible helps us learn more about God. Knowing more about God can actually help us cope better with our present challenges. This is because as we get to know God better, we get to know God’s thoughts about our challenges and find the strength to keep going.
In the midst of the COVID-19 outbreak and the downtime we may get as a result of being stuck at home, I would like to encourage you to spend time eating some necessary food daily.
Eat your daily bread – your necessary food – via studying the Word of God.
I would also like to encourage you to stay away from the snacks – i.e. the never-ending news updates, fake messages, fake remedies, insensitive jokes, and fear inducing messages that have been flying around – as these will not satisfy your longing for peace, comfort and reassurance.
I haven’t wandered away from the commands that he has spoken; I’ve treasured what he has said more than my own meals.” Job 23:12 ISV
