The Love of God shields us so that we are completely protected.
Human Attempts To Shield
Several weeks ago, I viewed a WhatsApp message containing images of people trying to shield themselves from the Corona Virus using different aids, some of them very ridiculous.
Some people were completely wrapped in plastic, some covered their faces with massive bottles, whilst some covered their noses and mouths with multiple gloves, and some even with underwear and sanitary products.
One thing that really struck me from viewing the images was that even though most of the people were trying to protect themselves from catching the Corona Virus, most of them were completely immersed on their their phones in crowded public spaces and not wearing any gloves.
I reckoned that phones and hands were probably the most germ prone places on those people. However, they had not seemed to give that any thought…
I cannot begin to explain how ridiculous some of the images in the message were. However, they did remind me of just how innovative and intelligent humans are, and how we always find a way of coping and surviving even in the most difficult times.
The fail-proof ability of God to shield
Above all, the images reminded me that God is our shield.
The images made me realise that no matter how hard people try to protect themselves, they can still catch the COVID-19 virus, as no one can be careful enough. I was just so glad that God is my Shield.
And because God is my Shield, if I do get exposed to the virus, and I am inadequate in protecting myself from it, I believe that God’s love shields me so that I am completely protected.
He shall cover thee with his feathers, and under his wings shalt thou trust: his truth shall be thy shield and buckler. Psalm 91: 4
Indeed, he who watches over Israel never slumbers or sleeps. Psalms 121: 4 NLT
The Shade at our right hand
One of my all-time favourite verses in the Bible is Psalms 121:5. It reads
The LORD is your keeper; The LORD is your shade at your right hand.
I believe that David called the Lord a “Shade at our right hand” because soldiers held their swords on the right hand (most right-handed people would) and their shields on the left hand.
Therefore I reckon that since the soldiers were unable to have their shields on the right side, if someone were to attack them from the back or the right side (the side that does not hold a shield), they would have to swing around to use their shield or maybe use their sword – depending on the angle and mode of attack, and if the soldier actually saw the attacker on time.
This verse really excites me because it reminds me that God is able to fill in the gaps where I am inadequate.
A thousand shall fall at thy side, and ten thousand at thy right hand; but it shall not come nigh thee. Psalm 91:7
In the midst of the COVID-19 outbreak, and whilst we try to stay safe and protect by adhering to the official restrictions and guidelines on protecting ourselves, I pray that we will rest in the comfort of knowing that God is our Shield.
He is able to protect us and our families even when we cannot adequately protect ourselves.
The LORD keeps you from all harm and watches over your life. Psalms 121: 7 NLT
