God is the Good Shepherd that is always looking out for us – His sheep.

Psalms 23 is probably the most popular Psalm in the Bible. It is a record of how David, who was a Shepherd in his early life, declares God to be his Shepherd.

David also listed some of the benefits the Lord makes available to him based on an analogy of his own relationship and experience with his flock.

In the midst of the uncertainty and devastation all around us as a result of the COVID-19 outbreak, let us remember that God is the Good Shepherd that David described in Psalms 23, and He will never forsake us.

Our Good Shepherd

He provides our needs and grants our wishes – The LORD is my shepherd; I shall not want (verse 1).

He feeds and strengthens our spirits with His word so that we do not lose hope – He makes me lie down in green pastures; (Verse 2a)

He keeps us calm and makes things easier for us through the peace He gives us – He leads me beside quiet waters (Verse 2b).

He helps us maintain our sanity when things get really bad – He restores my soul: (verse 3a)

He shows us how to live and teaches us to do right – He guides me in the paths of righteousness for the sake of His name (Verse 3b).

He accompanies us and protects us from the evil all around us so that we don’t have to fear – Even though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil, for You are with me; (Verse 4a).

He brings us corrective, comforting and reassuring words at the most difficult times, to ensure we remain on the path He has chosen for us – Your rod and Your staff, they comfort me (Verse 4b).

He gives us reasons to celebrate and be thankful even in difficult times – You prepare a table before me in the presence of my enemies. (verse 5a).

He empowers us to do the things He would have us do, so that we produce great results even when we feel inadequate You anoint my head with oil; my cup overflows (verse 5b).

He continues to be good and merciful to us, drawing us close to His side – Surely goodness and mercy will follow me all the days of my life, and I will dwell in the house of the LORD forever (Verse 6).
